Baki Apple Fritter refers to a series of memes and GIF Captions that relate characters and scenes from the anime Baki the Grappler with captions about apple fritters. The trend started in 2020, following a series of GIF captions on Tenor, like one that read, "me when i consume and absorb the nutrients of one apple fritter." Initially spreading on Reddit, the meme became popular on iFunny in 2023.

Origin

Currently, the first known memes referencing apple fritters and using scenes from Baki were five GIF captions posted to the website Tenor^{[1][2][3][4][5]} by user SchlonkinBeast on December 27th, 2020 (shown below).

Spread

The memes saw minimal spread until 2021, when Redditor Phoenixflash11 posted the "me when i consume and absorb the nutrients of one apple fritter" GIF to the /r/Grapplerbaki^[6] subreddit, asking, "What's with all the Apple Fritter/Baki memes LMAO," gaining over 380 upvotes in two years. Soon after, original GIFs surfaced in the subreddit, like two posted by Redditor Phoenixflash11 to /r/Grapplerbaki^[7] on August 15th, 2021, gaining over 240 upvotes in two years (shown below).

In 2023, the GIFs and screenshots started to spread on iFunny, predominantly starting with two reposts. One was from iFunnier^[8] @Markmellows on May 22nd, 2023, gaining roughly 2,600 smiles in five months. The other was shared by iFunnier^[9] @ArfArfSays on August 20th, 2023, receiving over 8,100 smiles in two months.

Thereafter, original iterations surfaced on the app, such as a crudely recaptioned meme shared by iFunnier^[10] @Stuff2Comment on August 29th, 2023, gaining over 4,400 smiles in two months (shown below, left). On August 30th, iFunnier^[11] @Jack_Hanma_ posted an iteration, gaining roughly 4,500 smiles in two months (shown below, right).

During the same timeframe, the trend was spreading on TikTok.^[12]
