About
Anton Ego's Flashback is an object labeling exploitable meme template inspired by a scene from the 2007 Pixar film Ratatouille. It is used by the poster to express how a new product reminds them of a positive experience they had with a different product in their younger years.
Origin
Towards the end of Rataouille, when feared critic Anton Ego revisits Gusteau's restaurant, he demands that Gusteau's give him their "best shot." Remy responds by making him ratatouille, much to Linguini's confusion. However, when the dish is served to Anton he takes a bite of it, and the taste immediately causes him to have a flashback to his youth when his mother cooked him a bowl of ratatouille after coming home from a bad day of bicycling (clip shown below).
Spread
The scene quickly became a meme template used to express that something new reminds them of a pleasant memory or product from their childhood. For example, on September 15th, 2018, Twitter user @stylonide[1] tweeted the template about Marvel's Spider-man, gaining over 9,500 retweets and 35,000 likes (shown below, left). The following day, Redditor Obligatory_username posted an example to /r/me_irl[2] comparing Bongo Cat to Keyboard Cat, gaining over 5,000 points (shown below, right).
