Alternative Responses to "I Love You" refers to an Alignment Chart exploitable in which characters from various pieces of media are paired with unusual responses to being told "I love you." The responses are taken from a Tumblr text post and the chart parodies began appearing in May of 2018.
Origin
On November 25th, 2017, Tumblr user salemwitchhunterofficial[1] posted a text post titled "Alternative Responses to "I Love You" which showcased a list of unusual and humorous responses to being told "I love you." The post gained over 27,000 notes (shown below).
Precursor
The ensuing charts made with the "alternative responses" bear resemblance to the Zelda's Response exploitable, which also paired different characters from pieces of media with various responses to "I love you." This meme spread in 2012.
Spread
Chart variations of salemwitchhunterofficial's post began appearing in the second half of May, 2018. One of the earliest known variations was posted May 18th by blogger yota on hanashika[2] using their original characters (shown below, left). On May 20th, a post appeared on /r/Gundam[3] using Gundam characters, gaining over 200 points (shown below, right).
Other popular variations include a post featuring Overwatch characters posted by Tumblr user acousticmalta which gained over 9,000 notes (shown below, left). On May 28th, ProZD posted a Legend of the Galactic Heroes parody that gained over 430 retweets and 2,400 likes (shown below, right).
On May 24th, Twitter user @ArticusB[4] posted a template version of the chart (shown below).
