A Wizard Turned Me Into A Cat, sometimes known as A Witch Turned Me Into A Cat, is a parody involving videos of cats with captions that claim that they were once people who were transformed via a curse by an evil wizard.

Origin

On June 22nd, 2021, TikToker annalolala posted a video of a cat next to a filled glass of wine, known as Stepan The Cat, which would go on to become the template for memes using the phrase in the future.^[1]

The original meme was created by iFunny user ImLiterallyRyanGosling and posted on July 24, 2023. It garnered 22.1k views in six months.^[2] (below is a repost to YouTube by user Parloq.)

Spread

Sometime after the creation of the original meme, parodies began to appear on TikTok. After its spread, the new iterations often changed the wizard from having been a victim of bullying to an evil wizard. Videos with more than one cat were often captioned with "me and my [bro/bestie/friends/homie] after being turned into cats." One of the most popular amongst these was posted by skeptic.memes on Instagram on September 12th, 2023, gaining over 1.1 million likes in five months (shown below).^[3]

Others involved the cat approaching their loved ones and revealing to them that they were turned into cats.^[4] One of the most popular versions of these was created by obsessed.w.herrr on TikTok on September 5th, 2023, gaining over 386,000 likes in five months (shown below).
