commonperson There's a reason for the focus, many of the people trying to push down and silence female voices of criticism and attempts for more gender equality try and say this is an outside influence by "SJWs" not by people playing games. The focus on how the numbers were obtained and their statistical validity speaks specifically to that. The claim was that the changes in the gaming community were being driven by a "cabal" of special interests while in fact the "gamers are dead" articles had a point. Gaming is shifting, more people are plaving games and not just mobile games but a variety of games who don't identify strictly as gamers but their behaviour patterns do conform to the levels of gaming engagement many identify as gamers. This directly counters the opinions of people who try and force the opinion of girls predominantly not being gamers or being "mobile only" What was most interesting and powerful to me was the view of sexualization of female characters, a constant refrain is girls aren't sexualized in games it's just what we want but the reality is looking at these numbers 61% of respondents by High School feel women are overly sexualized in games. This is a CLEAR majority ignoring those who are neutral on the matter (adding them to the mix it brings it up to 86%!) This shows a clear non-anecdotal hard number based evidence that the majority of people playing games view what is in games as wrong validating scores of critical thoughts on the matter This is just the start, but more serious academic study (the kind of study Gamergate by no coincidence attempted to discourage or destroy like their attempts to destroy the professional archival movement) shows that gaming is changing and this is amazing. I say this as a 40 year old who has been playing games since Pong, my chosen hobby is maturing and I'm glad to see it is starting to get the respect and academic rigour it should have recieved years ago May 15, 2015 2:09 PM

Author has 304 answers and 740.1K answer views. 5y Not that I care that much either way, but it did expose a lot of corrupt game developers and game journalists. X Journalists would make claims of people like Anita Sarkeesian "playing video games all her life" when she openly admitted many times she is not a gamer and only starter recently (when it wasn't for an interview). Various developers trading sex or money for good reviews got exposed, journalists who accepted got exposed. People became a bit more critical about supporting a game just because the developer has a victim complex stating tat their game could have only failed because of sexism, instead of their own poor developing skills. What really sealed the deal was opposition often faking their own harassment. Anita sarkeesian and Zoe Quinn have been caught multiple times screenshotting "harassment" while showing that the harrasser's account name in the login. Or when someone called the police to help Sarkeesian against a "very real threat" she was posting about, only for police to find the harasser's messages were coming from her IP address.
