Sunsetting @TheBlockBot Add comments As you all know there have been many valid criticisms of @TheBlockBot, unfortunately these have caused the community to lose some faith in it as a universal tool that can help marginalized groups have the best experience on Twitter possible. Criticisms include .Addressing diversity: The current team is not as diverse as it could or should be, a fact which itself reproduces some of the oppressions of marginalised people (e.g. racism, ableism) that we wish to address. We have failed to rectify that. Tending towards cliques: Grops of blockers are friends. Some have large accounts with lots of followers and this can intimidate either the users of the bot or some of the blockers Lack of flexibility If an account is put on a block list by mistake or for a controversial reason, the appeal process is unclear and stressful. Especially with in-community blocks, trust may be lost Scalability: The original design was easy to implement within Twitter's API when only small numbers of blocks needed to be implemented; there is no way to extend the same design to tens of thousands, or potentially millions of accounts For all these reasons we feel the current block bot project, as it stands, needs to come to an end. Because of increased popularity it has grown far beyond its original intent. Although many improvements have been made along the way, we have heard the concerns of the communities we serve and the time has come for a major change. We are delighted to welcome Lynn Cyrin to our team. She is well qualified to offer her programming and diversity services in order to help us improve. She is a staunch advocate of diversity, and has worked on a number of projects and publications. We are currently busy constructing a shared vision with Lynn detailing how The Block Bot will function long-term. Currently, The Block Bot only supports one blocking team made of individuals who may disagree and who have a variety of blocking philosophies. The different communities The Block Bot serves also have a diversity of perspectives and expectations that sometimes conflict. One proposed solution is to create a platform to address these concerns, similar to blocktogether.org. Our platform, however, would go beyond sharing personal blocks by enabling people to work together to build moderated block lists to serve specific community needs. In this developmental stage, the following features for this new platform are being discussed .Facilitating the formation of more than one blocking team Allowing users to opt-in or opt-out of individual blocker's blocks Creating clear policies for adding and removing blockers and admins Handling appeals more consistently Expanding users' block-list choices Soliciting feedback from users more effectively Providing a more robust system for users to suggest blocks. In order to make improvements, Lynn has proposed that the technical ownership of The Block Bot be passed onto CollectQT http:l/collectqt.me/. The members of CollectQT are programmer Lynn Cyrin, Culture and Community Organizer Ophelia Black, and PR Director Kiran Oliver. CollectQT has provisionally agreed to significantly rewrite The Block Bot over the summer Since CollectQT maintains a Patreon account, they are able to accept community financial support to pay for hosting, technical support services and development of new back-end code. While subscribing to The Block Bot wll remain free to all, this financial investment will allow the service to transition into a more professional service better suited to support the health and well-being of subscribers more effectively and flexibly. We highly encourage those who are willing and able to contribute to their organization to consider doing so Lastly, we would like to assure the communities we aim to support with our service that we are committed to continue to do what we do. Author has 304 answers and 740.1K answer views. 5y Not that I care that much either way, but it did expose a lot of corrupt game developers and game journalists. X Journalists would make claims of people like Anita Sarkeesian "playing video games all her life" when she openly admitted many times she is not a gamer and only starter recently (when it wasn't for an interview). Various developers trading sex or money for good reviews got exposed, journalists who accepted got exposed. People became a bit more critical about supporting a game just because the developer has a victim complex stating tat their game could have only failed because of sexism, instead of their own poor developing skills. What really sealed the deal was opposition often faking their own harassment. Anita sarkeesian and Zoe Quinn have been caught multiple times screenshotting "harassment" while showing that the harrasser's account name in the login. Or when someone called the police to help Sarkeesian against a "very real threat" she was posting about, only for police to find the harasser's messages were coming from her IP address. I just want honesty from the community, and the lies were mostly exposed by the "dreaded" gamergate. 1.3K views • View upvotes 26
