My friends and I heard of this "cool" graveyard that was popular with the local teens aptly called "Gates of Hell," which is in Elizabethtown. This place has such a big reputation, that word of it was floating around Louisville, about an hour north, where we lived. I finally convinced three of my friends, Jen, Kayla, and Alex, to come after a few hours of nagging. My one stipulation was that I really wanted to go on a full moon. Looking at a calendar, I realized that a full moon was almost a month away, but a new moon was going to be that Thursday, so I settled for that. That was my mistake After three intense days of waiting, it was finally Thursday. I couldn't contain my excitement, and I couldn't find a way to pass the time. Somehow, I managed to wait until dark before we left. We stopped at a gas station and I topped off my little Chevy Malibu, grabbed a few snacks, and we were on our way An hour later, we'd reached Elizabethtown. It was quaint, and little, and most definitely a boring place to call home. There was no way that this little boring town could hold something as evil as "Gates of Hell. Oh, how I was wrong We drove through town and finally got to St. John's Road, the street that has the graveyard at the very end. Other than the thick fog that randomly appeared and disappeared (a common thing in Kentucky, with all of its hills) I still couldn't find anything creepy yet, so I was calm. Needless to say, I was the only one that was. Jen was chain smoking (her coping mechanism, I'd discovered), Kayla was cursing my existence, and Alex was oddly quiet, but I could see that his whole body was shaking Now, if you've never been on St. John's Road, it's pretty much like any country road for a while. It's two lanes, surrounded by forest and occasional houses. But, near the very end, it becomes one lane. There were still a few sparse homes, so I felt like we were still in civilization, but then the road became gravel, the road narrower and the forest more oppressing, blocking out the whole sky. The houses were gone Normally, I'd just be p----- because this meant I'd have to leave by driving in reverse, but I realized that if, for some reason, something was after us, we'd be screwed. That's when I first felt the panic. I kept driving for what felt like forever down the dark gravel road. It felt like it was longer than all of the rest of St. John's Road, though Google Maps seems to think otherwise. All three of my friends were about beside themselves with fear now, so I tried to reassure them that we'd be fine and laugh about it the next day. I wish t were true After what seemed like every bit of half an hour, we arrived at almost exactly midnight. At first, none of us wanted to get out, which p----- me off because it took a quarter of a tank of gas to get there. Finally, I got the nerve up to get out of the car with my lame little hand-crank flashlight, but I decided to save its juice and just use the light from my headlights. I pleaded with my friends to get out, and after a while, they did. We wandered around the outskirts of the graveyard and realized that it was actually kind of relaxing, which we found odd, considering we were in a creepy graveyard in the middle of nowhere at midnight. I ran out into the graves because I wanted to see some of the dates. I trudged through the thorny weeds, glad that I had worn jeans, and I saw that most of the graves were small and for children. It sent a chill up my spine. I looked at dates on some of the bigger and less worn ones. 1887, 1804, 1839. The only thing I could say was "Wow." I had no idea that it was this old. My friends had joined me, and they, too were taken aback. I looked out into the distance, and I saw a lone tree in the clearing. I pointed it out, and Jen, the expert on local lore (and the one who told me of this graveyard in the first place), told me that the tree was the "Lynch Tree," where they had apparently lynched a bunch of Confederate deserters back in the day. For some reason, I felt compelled to go touch it. Kayla and Alex would have none of it, but Jen came with me. I ran ahead and got to the tree first, and I began to look around it. Then something tapped me on my shoulder. I looked, but there was no one there, and Jen was still about fifteen feet behind me. Then it happened. The lights of my car shut off, leaving us in complete darkness. The laughter came from all around us. Childrens laughter. I heard a blood-curling scream from Kayla. I frantically grabbed the flashlight from my pocket and turned it on. The light was weak, but it was enough to see the silhouette of a little girl run out of the beam. I was so scared, I couldn't even move, so I decided so shine my light around and see if I could find my friends. I couldn't. Not even Jen. I called out to them, but there was silence. I called again, just in case maybe I hadn't heard them. A little boy's voice coming from right behind me said "They're not here anymore I ran to my car. I ran faster than I had ever ran in my life. I tripped over a few graves, even knocking over a small obelisk, but I was determined not to fall, and I kept going. The flashlight died just as I reached my car and dove in, but the car wouldn't start--the battery in it had died, too. Of course. So, I resorted to cowering in fear in the drivers seat. Slowly, my eyes adjusted to the lack of light, and I saw them. The faces of little dead children. Surrounding my car. I wasn't religious, but I shut my eyes as tight as I possibly could and began to feverishly pray. To who, I don't know, but I was praying After what seemed like forever, the sky lightened and the sun finally began to rise, and for the first time since the ordeal began, I felt safe. My battery was still dead, so I decided to get out and walk to the nearest house to see if I could get a jump and call the police (if they'd even believe me). I knew it was going to be a long walk, because it took half an hour driving, so I decidedt pace myself. It only took 10 minutes. Walking That was a month ago. I've finally stopped having the nightmares, so I decided to sit down and tell my story en, Kayla, and Alex are still missing, and, though the police don't believe me, I know why. It's because they're ere anymore
