so. you discovered #GamerGate You took some time to look around and you see two prevailing narratives The first narrative is telling you that tens of thousands of gamers are engaging in a campaign to terrorize a small handful of women and other under-represented groups of people in the games industry for daring to ask to have a voice in the industry and it's community. These voices that are engaging in this hostile attack are composed of men, women and under-represented groups who have been fooled into supporting this hate-campaign because they're simply misguided and possibly ignorant or simply uneducated The second narrative is telling you that the games media websites are getting too cozy and have engaged in some rather questionable if not outright unethical (and possibly criminal depending on what information you get) be haviour and that women and other under-represented groups do have a place in this industry and community but are being painted by a group of media people that have gained too much influence Now, ask yourself this one question In the absense of any other evidence, which seems more likely? Let's look at what each position requires to be true Well, for the first narrative to be true you have to assume that tens of thousands of gamers condone and support these atrocious and terroristic behaviours and are all simply hating on a small collection of people. It also requires that the diverse voices of women and under-represented people are deluded or too ignorant to think for them selves For the second narrative to be true you have to assume that a handful of games media figures have been caught getting too cozy and caught engaging in questionable behaviour and are using their influence in the media to mis represent many, many people as simply toxic so as to distract and mislead others so as to avoid taking responsibil- ity for their own mistakes Which do you feel is the more logical? The one that assumes tens of thousands of gamers (Men, Women and under-represented individuals) are all simply hostile, stubborn, ignorant, deluded and maybe even myl? Or the one that assumes that a small group of people simply don't want to fess up to having been caught engaging in problematic behaviour? You decide. You have made it this far so you clearly have the mind to think critically All that most of us ever wanted in this #GamerGate issue was to have our voices heard. X Journalists would make claims of people like Anita Sarkeesian "playing video games all her life" when she openly admitted many times she is not a gamer and only starter recently (when it wasn't for an interview). Various developers trading sex or money for good reviews got exposed, journalists who accepted got exposed. People became a bit more critical about supporting a game just because the developer has a victim complex stating tat their game could have only failed because of sexism, instead of their own poor developing skills. What really sealed the deal was opposition often faking their own harassment. Anita sarkeesian and Zoe Quinn have been caught multiple times screenshotting "harassment" while showing that the harrasser's account name in the login. Or when someone called the police to help Sarkeesian against a "very real threat" she was posting about, only for police to find the harasser's messages were coming from her IP address.
