Comparing this to Polygon's ethics statement reveals that it clearly does not adhere to these guidelines Act Independently According to The SPJ Ethics Code, journalists should: Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived Remain free of associations and activities that may compromise integrity or damage credibility. Refuse gifts, favors, fees, free travel and special treatment..." However the policy of Polygon does not have commensurable standards: Our writers will not accept gifts (including food and drinks) in excess of $50 in value. Polygon staff are permitted to contribute to Patreon campaigns for members of the video game industry, but need to disclose the details of those contributions on their staff page as well as on any related coverage they publish on the site." It is the author's opinion that allowing the acceptance of gifts of any value represents the endorsement of an unethical relationship between the journalists at Polygon and those producing the video games that they cover and review. This policy should be changed forthwith to reflect that of the SPJ ethics code. $50 or less of swag is still swag and it should stop It is also the author's view that allowing patronage of developers by the journalists writing about them is an absolutely unacceptable practice even if full disclosure is given.
