Crazy fan theory time! I like to think that "magic" is the mlp equivalent to "ki". And that all species of ponies can generate that ki in their bodies and use it in different ways. Unicorns release their ki through their horn and their mind as magic Pegasi use their ki in their wings to make them fly and they also use it through their bodies to control the weather and wind. And earth ponies stowed it inside their bodies to make their bodies stronger, and through their bodies they may release their ki to the ground to make the plants grow faster.
