Origin Entry:
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Notes:
While the artwork was fairly good for the most part, I felt like Katie Cook didn't do very well writing such a large project, while her writing style seems to be more fit for smaller, slice of life stories, like what she did in the Rarity microseries. While the first issue was good by itself, the series slowly becomes more and more unreadable for me and by the time we get to the 4th issue, it becomes a complete train wreck.
If you think about it, issues 2-3 are completely POINTLESS because all they do is separate Twilight and her friends form each other just so they can come back together at the end of the 3rd issue. What saves these issues from becoming terribad are some really good jokes inside of them, like Pinkie's… Pinkie costume, and Fluttershy saying nature is so fascinating, those were really funny. But then there's the infamous scene where Chrysalis mauls a cat for no reason other than to establish more that she's evil.
one thing I was really excited about during the whole series was seeing the Changeling Kingdom, and i expected an awesome looking enormous hive sort of thing. But all we really got was just a generic medieval castle, that was a huge letdown for me. Then when they get inside they navigated their way through strange looking stairs and looked into doors that showed scary images (sound's familiar?!). And even when they showed the "scary" images all they really were just pop culture references form scary movies that felt rather forced.
And then there's the ending, the god-awful ending. I was expecting a really cool ending where Twilight's magic is drained and the mane 6 have to find a way to defeat her without Twilight and with Chrysalis being very powerful. But no, Katie comes up with the most cliche ending possible: Chrysalis want's Twilight to join her, she says no, Chrysalis threatens to hurt Twilight's friends, she says yes, she says she'll hurt them anyway, and Twilight says some b------- about how she's more powerful than her because she has friends or something and pummels the s--- out of her. I really admire how in FiM hey almost never have to rely on brute force to solve their problems, they use their wits or magic to get them out of predicaments, but here Twilight just uses brute force while preaching about friendship to defeat Chrysalis.
So, yeah, didn't really like it.
