The Elements returning from thin air being inside of them all along" was bollocks, and was an ilusion created by Luna to allow her a perfect cover story to return to her throne without a fight. Luna, during the 1000 years she had to think about her plan, noticed a very, VERY serious flaw in her "Eternal Night" plan. It was stupid. Everypony would die, then she would rule an empty barren, and NOPONY would enjoy her night. It was the product of an on-the spot fit of childish rage, not a detailed plan for revenge like she had hoped. Instead, she deigned to torment Celestia and her subjects in a much more lasting, and much less... permanent fashion. Being a teleporting Shapeshifter, with access to the entire castle, including the Element Vault in Canterlot Tower, she impersonated Discord. By stealing the "Elements" and acting like Discord, stained-glass illusions and all, she brought her sister's worst fears to life. Celestia thought that Discord's bonds were unbreakable. They were After causing her treacherous sister to cower in abject terror for a few days, doing things like raising/lowering the Sun and Moon and letting loose the dark side of her she has to repress in court, she let herself be defeated by leading the "Bearers" to the "Elements". Do you honestly think that Discord would be overconfident or stupid enough to do half of the things he did? She let them win. During Luna Eclipsed, it was just another day in the life of Paraspritemare Moon. Acting like she didn't know how to not use the RCV, even when she never used it immediately after her "defeat?" Bitch please, she knew exactly what she was doing. Namely messing with everyone's heads Now at this point, she caught wind of a Changeling invasion of Equestria. Rather than leave them to their own devices and let them destroy her playground eventual night-respecting realm through smart tactics, she slew and impersonated their Queen, formulating an idiotic plan for them, primarily involving ignoring all of a Changeling's natural advantages in a full frontal attack. She then locked Cadence in an obscure and abandoned section of the mountain, one that only she, Celestia, and a handful of dedicated scholars know about, much less know how to find (seriously, how would a foreigner know about those caves?) and proceeded to unleash her dark side, now that she had a perfect scapegoat. When she was inevitably found out (not sure if she put Twi in a weak portion of the prison intentionally, or just didn't expect it and planned to have them break the shield then let SA free) instead of shape-shifting into her true form (I mean seriously, who would do that? *rolleyes*) she creates a false front. Now everything that she did will be attributed to ANOTHER shapeshifter, leaving her suspicion free She then let SA free, and boosted his magic, letting her escape, and plastering countless changelings against inner walls. Equestria will never be bothered by Changelings again, the legitimately deadly secret, grassroots invasion was averted, and she got to beat up her sister and put her in a slimy sack. Win/win/win.
