While the item could originally be interpreted as a cameo of a Zelda item in a Mario game, the melody later appeared in both series independently of each other, suggesting that this item is no longer a reference but simply something that exists in both universes. ...an ending screen that features Link and Zelda standing in the Hyrule Castle courtyard. The camera is angled in such a way that through the window directly above Link, portraits of Bowser and Luigi (two of a series of Mario- related pictures put behind that window as Easter eggs) are barely visible. As such, the game starts off with a melody that connects the Mario and Zelda franchises and ends with a final screen literally containing Link, Zelda, Bowser and Luigi.
