It should be noted that the screenplay for The Godfather was co-written with Francis Ford Coppola, who was already an Academy Award-winning screenwriter for Patton (1970). More infamously, his 550-page long screenplay for the first two Superman films was heavily rewritten, up to the point that not a single word from it was used in the final films, according to Tom Mankiewicz.
