Don't answer the phone, "Hello?" + Follow If you know that Rachael the Recruiter is going to call you at 3pm on Tuesday, answer the phone, "Hello, this is Allison". This makes you look professional right off the bat. 2. Don't skip the small talk. If the recruiter says, "Hey, how are you?"...don't say, "Good, how are you?" This is your opportunity to show how positive, uplifting, and enthusiastic you are. You can instead say, "I'm doing great! I just went for a walk outside and it's a gorgeous day, how are you?" 3. Cheat. If you're on the phone, that means you can be looking at their company website, your notes, answers to common interview questions...the possibilities are endless. Be prepared, have material in front of you that you can reference. (And I'm kidding. This isn't cheating, it's being smart) What else would you add? It was a simple comment of "I wish we had feature X". I thought I was being fun. I thought it would get emoji responses and we would move on. The engineers solved it. Do you know how much we pay Software Engineers!? I did not mean for them to work on this thing and solve my issue. But they wanted to make things better, and if the manager points out an issue, they felt like it should be solved. This was not a big deal, and not a ton of time was spent, but it was a good reminder for me that I am not an engineer, I am a manager. And while that title is mostly meaningless to me, it means something to others. What I say magically holds more gravity not because of the merit of the statement, because of the title I hold. OPENTOWORK Jason Roeder. 3rd+ Copywriter/Comedy Writer/Editor/... 1w. + Follow I immediately remove my shoes and socks upon entering any interview. Why do I do this? If they say nothing, I know they will not enforce even the most fundamental dress code. I cannot work in such chaos. If they tell me to put them back on, I know conformity reigns in this workplace, and my creativity will suffer. I cannot work there. If they tell me to put one sock and shoe on, I know they value balance and compromise. Only then will I work there.
