It was a simple comment of "I wish we had feature X". I thought I was being fun. I thought it would get emoji responses and we would move on. The engineers solved it. Do you know how much we pay Software Engineers!? I did not mean for them to work on this thing and solve my issue. But they wanted to make things better, and if the manager points out an issue, they felt like it should be solved. This was not a big deal, and not a ton of time was spent, but it was a good reminder for me that I am not an engineer, I am a manager. And while that title is mostly meaningless to me, it means something to others. What I say magically holds more gravity not because of the merit of the statement, because of the title I hold. If they say nothing, I know they will not enforce even the most fundamental dress code. I cannot work in such chaos. Who knows. A year, maybe more. Where am I going? A bunch of places. One every few months until I'm done. Why? To mandate absolute focus on a very small number of things (Postman included), fortify my network with coworkers and old/ new faces, force minimalism, and cattle-prod my brain. How am I going to afford it? By renting out my house to cover Airbnbs. Sure, it was planned months in advance. There was prep work. I'm not just blasting off into the ether. But still. This could be a terrible idea, but it could also be genius — we'll find out. Wish me luck.
