Supper Mario Broth @MarioBrothBlog In Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World, Luigi's sprites seem to reference, either coincidentally or intentionally, two common misconceptions about Mario's sprites from Super Mario Bros.: that he spits fireballs from his mouth, and that he hits bricks with his head. At the time of the release of Super Mario Bros., these were some of the common misconceptions about Mario's sprites and animations featured in that game: HOCH Many players thought Mario was spitting fireballs from his mouth instead of throwing them. This is due to Mario lifting his hand up at an odd angle to throw the fireballs (caused by graphical limitations; extending his arm further forward would have broken out of the 16x32 pixel sprite boundary and required additional resources). The artwork shows the correct interpretation. Another misconception was that Mario hit bricks with his head instead of with his hand. Only by looking closely at the sprite can we see that his hand is actually 2 pixels above his head, which was hard to see on CRT TVs at the time. The artwork shows the correct interpretation. In Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World, Luigi received a new set of sprites with original animations not used in his other appearances which seem to play on these misconceptions: Here, Luigi actually spits fireballs from his mouth. He puts his arms down and opens his mouth, whereupon the fireball emerges from it. Whether these have been chosen specifically to reference the misconceptions or whether this is merely a notable coincidence is unknown He also hits bricks with his head, by keeping his arms down while jumping.

In Super Mario 3D World, touching power-up blocks is always preferable to hitting them. Details in image.

In Super Mario 3D World, as in many other Mario games, Question Blocks use a "progressive power-up system"; e.g. if Mario is Small Mario, the block will dispense a Super Mushroom when hit. If he is already Super Mario, it will dispense a second-order power-up like a Super Bell. However, when using the touch cursor (touching the Wii U GamePad in the Wii U version/ touching the Switch screen or using R in the Switch version) to interact with the Question Block, it will always dispense the second-order power-up even if the character is still small. As such, it is always preferable to touch Question Blocks rather than hit them. Note: in multiplayer mode, the Question Block will dispense one progressive power-up per hit and one second-order power-up per touch, for a total equaling the number of players. For example, if playing with Small Mario and Super Luigi, hitting the block twice will produce a Super Mushroom and Super Bell, but touching it twice will produce two Super Bells. As such, it is still always preferable to touch the blocks.
