By the time of this advertisement being published in late 1992, the series was still new to the USA, with the original Final Fantasy only getting an American release in mid-1990. However, the series was rapidly expanding, and Mystic Quest was actually the seventh game with the Final Fantasy moniker in the USA.

Mystic Quest was designed for a Western audience, and as such is notoriously simpler than many of its RPG contemporaries. This makes the advertisement's emphasis on being a "brainy" game somewhat humorous in retrospect. The game had a fairly lukewarm reception in the USA, with Electronic Gaming Monthly giving a review score of 29/40 in their previous issue, describing it as a decent game for genre newcomers but little more.
