Wrote this as a comment in passing but it's very funny and bewildering so I'm gonna share it here too since I've just discovered this sub. My partner and I live in the states and were confronted at the supermarket by a Karen who approached us to ask if we're latinx because "you speak Mexican". We said we're not Latino, we're Spanish to which she got very riled up because "you may be Spanish (said while doing air quotes) but you're speaking Mexican though" and corrected us that the right term is LatinX. Saying latino is discriminating and non-inclusive and we should go learn about our heritage before we try to lecture her because she's a History teacher and knows "a thing or two". She also interrogated us asking "what are you doing here / where do you work / are you here legally / are you part of the caravan?" and demanded we "produce" our green cards to prove to her we're really not LatinX or illegals. Like w-- lady we don't have anything to prove to you. Then she threatened to call I.C.E. because we're in her country speaking "Mexican", not respecting her culture, and acting "shady". Damn Karen, you caught us! We've come to sell drugs, steal your spouses and take your jobs Imao you f**king moron. An employee came over because this woman kept raising her voice and told us to just show her our green cards to get her to leave us alone. We refused and right away a manager showed up and said no, we don't have to prove anything to her because we're customers just as she is and if she keeps making a scene and harassing us she'd have to ask her to leave. Then Karen's focus switched to the manager and started berating her (at least she left us alone) saying she's a "good Christian woman" and spends thousands of dollars a year on the store, how dare she ask her to leave because she's "protecting her country from the mexicans". We didn't hear more because we went to the till to pay and left. I've lived in a few different countries but have never encountered odd characters like I do in the states. At some point we did think we were being pranked by a TV show or Youtuber because the situation was bizarre. You'd think a History teacher would know not everybody who speaks Spanish is Mexican. Hard to believe someone like that can be a teacher, but then again, this happened in Alabama. And a teacher who's a bigot but at the same time cares about using LatinX so we include all genders and don't discriminate? The whole situation was crazy. Edit to add- We've also been told we're racist because our adopted black Labrador's name is Obama, but we adopted him at 7 years old with that name. They told us in the shelter that they had tried to change his name because some volunteers had complained that it was racist but the dog wouldn't respond to the new name. So it stayed Obama.
