Supper Mario Broth @Mario BrothBlog The reason Donut Blocks appear donut-shaped in 2D Mario games, but log-shaped in 3D Mario games is that they are not actually based on donuts, but tube- shaped Japanese fishcakes called chikuwa instead. Details in image. The reason Donut Blocks in the Mario series do not always look like donuts is because they are not actually based on donuts. Their original Japanese name is 277 (Chikuwa Lift), referring to chikuwa, a type of Japanese fishcake. However, when chikuwa are viewed from above, they appear more like a log, explaining their oblong shape in the 3D Mario games. This is not consistent with the name "Donut Block", but the original translators had no way of predicting that future 3D video games would feature these blocks in a way that does not fit the donut theme. 000 00 QOO As chikuwa are tube-shaped, they look like a circle with a hole in the middle when viewed head-on, similar to a donut. This is the way Donut Blocks appear in 2D Mario games; as that was their original appearance, the translators believed that changing the reference to donuts would still describe the shape while also not confusing Westem audiences unfamiliar with Japanese food. THESE DONUTS ARE GREAT! JELLY-FILLED ARE MY FAVORITE. : Curiously, this is not the only case of a Japanese food being translated as a donut in a major Nintendo-associated franchise for the benefit of non-Japanese audiences. In the Pokémon anime series, Brock calls onigiri (rice balls) "jelly donuts due to concerns that Western children may not be familiar with rice balls.
