The Buddha is depicted with those curls for a reason. That isn't his hair. Those are snails who crawled upon his head to shield his head from the sun as Buddha meditated, dying in the process. It was during this meditation that Buddha achieved enlightenment, which the heat would've disrupted. As such, these 108 snails are considered martyrs and that is why they are religiously depicted in most statues of The Buddha.
