So I decided to poke around pre Brawl days. I found a lot of stuff. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo Switch VeridisQuo ▼ 4 days ago #1 So, this took a lot of digging around and research. I looked all over the web, finding old forums and news pages, and I think I got a good idea of this fanbase during Brawl prerelease. Here's all that I found. Expect more posts, cause I found a lot. The first thing, the first f***ing thing I saw, was someone responding to news of a new trailer with "Yeah, right. Nintendo didn't announce a new Smash game. And there's no way that f***ing Solid Snake would be playable. Stop spreading lies.".We're off to a good start. Sonic was Geno x8, what with how highly requested he was, and how much pushback he got from detractors. Third parties were disisive. Some people thought that Snake ruined the Nintendo theme of Smash, and was too realistic for the 'cutesy' artstyle of past games. Others, however, welcomed the idea with open arms, and instantly saw it as a way for their favorite characters to get in. (Sonic, Crash, for some reason Conker was more talked about then Banjo) Someone actually brought up Piranha Plant as playable. True, he mistook Petey Piranha, but he still thought that a Piranha Plant was playable, saying things like "I saw Mario get hit by a cannon ball in the trailer. Can't Piranha Plants shoot cannonballs?" "2-4 more third parties" They jacked up their expectations, and took Sakurai saying "Besides Snake, I may add one or two more third parties", and twisted it to "I'm going to add two more for sure, and maybe more if I feel like it." Cue cries of "Sakurai promised us one more 3rd party!" This is an exact, literal quote I found when somebody brought up characters they wanted to see: " lol. Sonic- Sega, Final Fantasy- Square, Kingdom Hearts- Square, Halo- Microsoft, Naruto- yeh.. .piss off! It should be safe to say that, u won't ever find these characters in SSB :)" We would go on to see Sonic and Final Fantasy in SSB. Hindsight is a b****. Nobody knew when it was gonna drop. A launch title for the Rev? 2007? Never? People were antsy for this to drop. Expectations were sky high. "I'm thinking 60 characters" I have no clue how people thought that was a remotely realistic idea at the time, but they thought that this was gonna be the craziest s*** ever. Everyone praised the s*** out of these graphics because it was 2006. Kinda funny in hindsight, now that most people think that it looks too gritty and didn't age well, graphically. Moveset speulation. People expected stuff like a new B attack, Mario getting a Galaxy moveset overhaul, and Snake getting his box as a shield. Toad was highly expected. I guess because he's the biggest Mario character not in the roster, and every game up until then had Mario character. Side note, the Wii JUST became a thing. Some people were still calling it 'the Rev' because Wii was childish. Plusle and Minun were thrown around a bit, probably because of Pichu. Interesting, cause they may have been considered, to an extent. Red was called "An Ash look alike" when he was first announced. The words 'nerf and 'buff already existed. Misinformation, misinformation, misinformation. People would say total bulls*** and people would take it at face value. "Brawl won't be Wii remote compatable." "Wow, that's epic." They were already complaining about how ZSS was 'nerfed' physically. "She looked serious and like Lara Croft in Zero Mission, now she looks like Sailor Moon! Why, Nintendo? WHYYYYYY? (sic)" There were fake leaks. Like, apperently Daddy Sakurai himself just casually dropped 3 newcomers in a radio interview of all things, being Ridley, Wind Waker Link, and Bowser Jr., and Mr.GnW, Young Link, and Icies were cut. And people just ate that s*** up! VeridisQuo ▼ (Topic Creator) 4 days ago #2 Speaking of that leak, Ridley was... kinda considered a 'literal who'. Like, a lot of people had no clue who he was, what he did, or what he looked like. One guy even said "I hope he's really fat. Then he'll be my favorite character in this game." People were talking about wanting another Earthbound character. You know who came up a lot? That's right, Poo. Nobody really knew what the corrilation between ZSS and Samus was. Did she transform now? Was she a seperate slot? Who knows? Nobody really liked the idea of Toon Link. They just didn't like the idea of a character from The Wind Waker being playable, and thinking that he'd be reduntant and we should keep Young Link instead. They were in that general phase of "This game doesn't look the way I want it to, therefore it almost killed the franchise. It looks kiddy and dumb." With other people saying that it's actually a great game with good sales amd reviews, and it was kinda just a never ending arguement. Sorta reminds me of a certain Pokemon game, lol. Someone said to stay away from the SSBB board of GameFAQs, calling it 'a black hole of stupidity'. Damn, I really wish I coulda saw that black hole back in 06. It seemed like people thought that Wavedashing was a glitch put in by Hades himself, what with all the salt I've seen about it, and wanting it gone. Speculation about the story mode. People had high hopes about it, thinking that there would be branching story routes depending on your choices (IE saving Zelda or Peach). Little would they know that it only changes a few fights and minorly changes some cutscenes, and that's the only choice in the entire game. Due to a misunderstanding, people thought you would deadass s*** fire from eating the Superspicy Curry item. VeridisQuo ▼ (Topic Creator) 4 days ago #5 So then I went to BrawlFAQs and hopped on the first page. They just found out about the leaked roster from the japanese release, in 2008. Holy f***. It was, in fact, a black hole of stupidity. People thought that the 35 character roster wasn't final, and whoever leaked it just didn't unlock everything "Toon Link WILL be renamed Young Link when it's released here." Okay sure man. Landmaster Wolf and his Landmaster was an unending plague, and the least popular character on the roster. Everyone expected Krystal, because her voice actor said she was doing a role somewhere. (Again, golly, this sounds familiar.) For some reason somewhere down the line everyone thought that Ness was gonna be cut, and were angry to see him back. Like, okay, damn, what happened to wanting Poo? "This is the last Smash game. They can't do any more then this."..Holy f*** we're all trapped in Groundhog Day. "Guys, I have DEBUNKED the 35 character leak! This video says that there are 39 seperate playstyles, but there are less then that because the 5 clones don't have a seperate playstyle. We're getting 5 more characters, get HYPE!" Nobody liked R.O.B. He was like Incineroar, pretty much. Some people were salty and thought he was stupid, and people laughed them about it. Sonic melted everyone's brain when he was announced. Also, people expected more Sonic characters for some reason. People seemed happy and accepting of ATs, recognizing that it's pretty much a consolation prize for not being playable. One person even hoped Roy was an AT, because that was his main in Melee. The jokes were horrible. This was the time of "SO RANDOM XD POTATO CAPS=FUNNYYYY" Someone deadass thought that the reason why it was taking a while to release in the states was because.. they were replacing Lucario's model with Mewtwo's. Because Lucario is so obviously a 1 to 1 clone of Mewtwo, and it couldn't possibly be because of the lengthy localization of such a text heavy game. Nope. Gotta be that. People were s***ting on other people's character choices. Saying stuff like "You only did this to yourself for wanting Ridley/Krystal/Isaac/whoever. There are so many better characters to want. You were delusional to think he had a chance." ..Same as it ever was, same as it ever was, same as it ever was, same as it ever was. Some more MGS reps were wanted, like Psycho Mantis and Revolver Ocelot. It looks like people even justified certain third party picks even then, saying MGS made sense because the original games were on the NES, as well as the GameCube port. Even back then, people considered Lucario to be obvious because of his popularity and prominence. I saw some people bring up Geno, but more in a way of "It'd be cool, but it'll never happen." .You know, not at all toxic or annoying. Character development? Because the concept of 3rd parties was so new, and nobody knew the extents of it, we got unironic support for Batman, Spiderman, Naruto, and the man himself Goku. Some people deadass thought the game would have Simon, Mega Man, Pit, and Captain f***ing N as playable characters together. Did people actually like that horrible show? It was such a waste of a concept. Nobody wanted cuts, really. The only characters people wanted cut were Pichu and Dr. Mario. Some people called the concept of the Assist Trophy, but a lot of people thought that Nintendog was a playable character (and it was actually planned, up to a point.) People were so excited for the online multiplayer. Man, that breaks my heart. We really got it good, compaired to Brawls online. Little Mac got a bit of support, but it wasn't as wild as it was back in Smash 4. Some people also threw around Glass Joe and King Hippo. Stupid speculation theories were alive and well even back in 06. "The Brawl theme was made by a FF composer. A Square rep is guranteed! I bet it's Sora!" There was a lo00oot of hype for Sonic. If you think anyone is exaggerating when they say he made the most waves in Smash history, they're not. It's exactly like they say. On the other hand, a lot of people expected Sonic, and said that it was the most obvious choice for a third party. They ain't wrong, but still. And because Sonic 06 was fresh on people's minds, a lot of people would not stop clowning on him, saying that he's finally in a good game, and his attacks would cause lag and make him fall through the floor. More misinformation. "It's gonne be retitled Smash Bros Brawl Forever, it will be the last Smash game, and it's gonna have 50 characters." ZeRo was around, at least a guy named zero, and.. still getting things wrong. At a demo, he stated "It feels like everyone has the same speed in this game, aside from Bowser and Ike" Early on, some people assumed that the original Samus was cut and replaced with ZSS, and her whip was a lightsaber. More then one person thought this. Can't make this s*** up. Someone all the way back in 2006 already thought up the concept of paying for an extra downloadable character. Before Makoto Nanaya, before Yoda/Darth Vader in SC4, there was some random forum dweller. Some people weren't happy with Wario ready, due to thinking that his 'super move' (Final Smash) was the atomic fart from the trailer. Lots of people took one look at the fact that it was for the Wii, and yet still asked anyway "Can I get this on GameCube?" Even back then, people thought that Isaac was something of a long shot. Camelot has a history of doing GS dirty, it seems, cause before Dark Dawn, people ALREADY thought it was a stagnent series. Fake leaks with pics were a thing back then. There was a leaked boxart with Rayman, Birdo, Bowser Jr., and K.K. Slider. Why are we still falling for leaks just because they have pictures/videos? When Pokémon Trainer was announced, people had pretty much two thoughts. 1. "Holy frick (yes they actually censored themselves) Charizard is finally playable!" And 2. "Wait, what the frick is this 'stamina' thing?" Someone said 'yeet' in 06. Someone wanted just Wolf Link without Midna, in a bizarre reversal of the usual idea of just Midna. While Sonic did indeed break the internet, let it be said that Snake certainly did as well. He was the first thing that made literally everybody flip out. Nobody saw him coming, he caught everyone off guard, and him and Sonic were always the first things on everyone's minds when talking about this game. However, because he was the first one, he also got the most heat from people thinking that this was a terrible idea. Some people honestly treated him worse then people would treat Goku today. "W--????? IT'S SUPER SMASH BROS, NOT SUPER ANY CHARACTER EVER BROS!!" There was a fake leak that said that it was from a Prima guide (Wow, we still falling for this), and it said that the only characters cut were Roy, Pichu, and Doc. Young Link would pretty much just be Toon Link, and the newcomers would include Krystal, Isaac, Geno, K. Rool, Ridley, Megaman, Animal Crossing Villager, and instantly bought it. And then even more people bought it when it got Olimar right. Really, it just goes to show, don't instantly believe a leak if it looks like it got a thing or two right. Lucario, Wolf, or R.O.B. Again, people Related to the above, some people asked how Villager could possibly play, thought that Tom Nook would make more sense, and call the leak fake on those grounds.Because Villager obviously has no moveset potential and will never be in. Interestingly, it seems that Sonic 06 used to just go by Sonic Next, which I think was it's code name. Only tangentelly related, but call it world building. Some people thought that the SSE would have BlazBlue-esque 'Character stories', where each character gets their own story mode. The idea of being snowglobed existed somewhat back in Brawl, with a couple of people lamenting that Deoxys was 'PokeBall'd", before agreeing that this makes Lucario the most likely Pokémon rep. I mean Deoxys had no chance in hell to be playable before getting Pokéball'd, but go off. Some people were having a Simon-Richter dillema going on with Marth and Roy. Who was the original, and who was the clone? Who was going to stay; the first or the most recent? Of course this was obvious in hindsight, but some people wanted both cut, though most agreed that they wanted neither cut.
