WHAT IS According to a 2003 explanation titled, HACKTIVISM? What is Hacktivism? 2.0" and published by TheHacktivist.com, the definition of hacktivism is "the fusion of hacking and activism; politics and technology." HACKING ACTIVISM There are different forms of Hacktivism, but essentially the term refers to hackers who use their technological skills to draw attention to social or political problems. There are Hacktivists all over the world. Perhaps the most notably Hacktivist group is called Anonymous." ANONYMOUS The Hacker group Anonymous was first identified in 2003 on the online image board 4chan as a loosely organized group of individuals that has been responsible for high-profile hacks on government agency websites, websites for global corporations and for taking a stand on many social and political issues. Their public symbol has become the Guy Fawkes mask. While their work has been labeled "cyber-terrorism" by some, it is considered a positive form of conscienceness-raising by others. Anonymous has pledged to protect the free flow of information via the internet and for journalists and citizens. ANONYMOUS' MOST NOTABLE WORK Anonymous has been in the news quite a bit recently. You may have heard about the group's alleged hacking of the North Korean government's website as a protest against leader Kim Jong-un. But did you know that the collective has been active for years? These are some of the most notable hacks from the web's spotlight hacktivist group: Project Chanology: An attack on the church of scientology [in response to the church's attempt to censor web content) in which Anon members physically and digitally protest the church, including rigging search engines so that anti-scientology sites are prominently displayed to searchers. 2008 Tyranny In Iran: President Ahmadinejad is re elected in ran in an election that is believed to have been rigged.
