Red spider lily is associated with death and reincarnation. Its blooming represents the change of seasons from summer to autumn. They often grow on cementaries and are used in funerals.
Its popular Japanese name 'Higanbana' means the flower of Sanzu River, the flower of afterlife. They are often described as ominous flowers that guide the dead to their next reincarnation. Legend has their scent brings all the beautiful memories of the dead for one last time, before they dissapear when they cross the Forgotten River.
It is believed that if you meet a person you'll never see again, these flowers will grow along you path.
In Hanakoba (Japanese language of flowers) they symbolise loss, longing, abandonment and lost memories.
