The show contradicts so much previous EU that I'm almost positive that it was the linchpin of an EU mulligan. TLDR If CGI Wars is well received then we go forward with a new continuity If people think it sucks and liked the original stories more then we only do a few seasons and then fit it into normal continuity and move on. In truth, Lucas always treated it as non-canon, so when Lucasfilm started working on their first non-movie big budget project, they were encouraged to pick what they liked from the EU, but not to actually stay within its continuity. This is why there is so much EU fanservice in TCW (and Rebels). On top of Lucasfilm having the freedom to ignore EU continuity, they also simply WANTED the fresh start. EU was, for all its great stuff, a clusterfuck. But if you start releasing comics and cartoons and books (and more movies) AFTER Lucas finishes his 6-movie Saga, well now you can accurately build a continuity from the complete world and story he set And unlike the EU, Lucasfilm now has a dedic ated team to ensure that continuity errors are few-to-none It just so happened, il think anyways, that the best time to officially declare the EU was non-canon, was when everybody was overhyped for a new movie. That way they wouldn't take a huge PR hit
