![Brexit won't boost support for Scottish independence 08 June Britain's departure from the European Union would not necessarily increase support for Scottish independence, a new poll suggests. Surveys have consistently shown that the vast majority of Scots back the Remain campaign, with the latest Kantar TNS poll putting support at 71 per cent, with 29 per cent wanting Brexit. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has long argued there would be strong demand for a second independence vote were Britain to drag Scotland out of the EU But asked if they would vote for Scottish independence if Britain withdrew against the wishes of Scotland, 44 per cent of those surveyed said yes while 56 per cent said no There is little evidence that opinion towards independence has shifted significantly since 2014,"pollster Tom Costley told The National. Support for a Yes vote, even in these circumstances, [is] well below the 60 per cent level that Sturgeon has indicated she would be looking for before calling another vote." Even if Britain does vote to leave, experts say there are still many hurdles to overcome before Scotland can hold another referendum. The uncertainties that defeated independence in 2014 remain, according to The Economist. "Oil prices are half as high as then, so an independent Scotland would face even bigger economic and fiscal difficulties," it says. The EU might be more welcoming to a Scotland seeking membership after Brexit, but it would still object to its keeping the pound, the newspaper adds.
