First of all, just take a good look at this s---. We have not only an "ifunny.co" watermark but a "MemeCenter.com" one. All that's missing is the old "VIA 9GAG.COM" side sticker. The editing and formatting is simply atrocious, but not in a "so bad it's good" way that montage parodies were originally going for but in a "this is a stupid kid who didn't give a s---" way. The low-res background Pepe is stretched as hell (hard to notice in this small version) and the transparent image overlays arent much better. They're just a few montage parody tropes (now known unironically as "dank memes") carelessly thrown over the image. The hitmarker, once used in videos at least when something made contact with something else, is now slapped beside Pepe because why the f--- not? It's a DANK MLG MEME. The s----- Illuminati cartoon vector, once used at least over triangular shapes to parody conspiracy theories, is now slapped over Pepe because it's a DANK MLG MEME. And Snoop Dogg over in the top right corner? If you weren't up to date on your "1337 Interwebz Knowledge", would you even know that's Snoop? Why is he cut off? Did the creator ust not give a s--- and throw him in anywhere because he's another DANK MLG MEME? Lastly, this kid has probably never once heard of Doritosgate, but he'll still throw in the old Doritos and Mountain Dew along with the Deal With It glasses and Top Kek hat because, hey, it's all s--- he's seen in McChickenMasters and Pyrocynical's MLG videos (or even worse, "Thug Life"-type Vines that use some of the same s---), so it must be cool, right? I'm honestly disappointed he didn't put a blunt in Pepe's mouth just to top it off The whole idea behind this image, both the top-bottom Impact caption format and the "when..." Twitter type of "meme", is something that would have been lambasted by the original montage parody community and "ironic meme" community at large. Several of the forerunners of these videos, including Snips and Vagabonds, have up and quit making them because of what the genre turned into. Even in Snipars's last few months of montages, they weren't the kinds that involve all the memes one comes to expect in them today, but more of the avant-garde type of off-color, experimental video you would see in the ge arly days (of which he around for). The same sort of ing of opes and running jokes has long happened to Youlube Poop (a genre fortunate enoug to continue to this day due to its versatile nature in contrast to montage parodies). Those who are familiar with it know what I'm talking about, so I'm not going to explain it here The ironic use of phrases such as "le", "meme", and "xd" were intended to lampoon the sort of juvenile, cancerous s--- seen on Reddit and especially 9gag, but the kids who started coming across montage parodies about a year ago could not tell satire from genuine "lol random" humor. I know this because l was once one of these kids. Back when Weegee was the hot, fresh, spicy meme catch of the day, I didn't understand whyI kept seeing him in video:s and pictures, but I did, so l subconciously justified that he must be funny for some reason and eventually found his appearance alone amusing. These kids have done the same thing with montage parodies and the ironic meme subculture from which they were born. It's hard to tell when or how the transition occurred, but at some point they found these videos, were amused by the aggressive and flashy visuals, music, ad sound effects, and soon realized the patterns and "memes" that were reccurring and adopted them with all their other Vine fads and Twitter text post memes The only problem is, where does it go from here? The ironic meme subculture grew from the corpse of the likes of rage comics and advice animals only to become exactly like those communities a few years later. Since the ironic underground memetic community is so closely connected to montage parodies in origin, so many new memes are prone to getting absorbed into the MLG black hole of cancer, never to return from normiedom again (l can't believeI There's Kek, Shrek, Rekt, m8 Face, Darude Sandstorm, and all things spooky and skeleton just to name a few I may sound like some hipster who just doesn't like things when they become popular, but think about it. Do you still rage faces? Did rrow to the knee"? The betwe bad fandom of somet meme hat you can ign bad fandom enjoy a work, but your experi meme i rou r pe begin with epea incorrec sage ou timately not like because people have beat at definitely happened with montage parodies and much of the ironic meme c ral Maybe the explanation is I'm some autistic f----- who takes in-jokes on the Internet way too seriously. Who knows?
