About
X, the Everything App is an unofficial slogan for the social media site X, formerly Twitter, in line with Elon Musk's stated ambition to give X functionality beyond a microblogging platform. On the platform itself, the catchphrase is often used sarcastically to mock various aspects of X, including things like poor function and the promotion of extremist content.
Origin
On October 4th, 2022, Elon Musk tweeted, "Buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app."[1] The post gained over 44,000 retweets and 391,000 likes in two years.
The idea of an "everything app," or an app that is widely integrated into various aspects of society in addition to being a social media platform, is already common in Asian countries,[2] as apps like China's WeChat, Japan's Line and South Korea's KakaoTalk are capable of handling messaging, social media and financial transactions. Other Western social media companies, including Meta, have attempted to create something similar, to no avail.
In July 2023, Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino[3] tweeted that Twitter's version of the "everything app" would handle "audio, video, messaging [and] payments/banking." In roughly a year, Yaccarino's tweet received over 50.8 million views, 33,000 likes and 12,000 replies.
Spread
As Twitter phased into its transformation to X in 2023 and 2024, the phrase "X, the Everything App" became widely used as a sarcastic jibe to mock the site's poor functionality, promotion of extremist content and the numerous controversies surrounding Elon Musk.
This particularly came into vogue when Musk announced that Twitter would officially become "X" on July 23rd, 2023. The phrase featured prominently in some Twitter users' skepticism of Musk's stated ambition.
For example, on July 24th, Twitter user @David_j_roth[4] joked, "Attempting to make a home loan payment on X: The Everything App and accidentally sending the word 'peñus' to the official account of the Milwaukee Brewers," gaining over 830 retweets and 6,700 likes in one year.
The phrase also began seeing use as a sarcastic quip about the type of content posted on Twitter / X. For example, on October 22nd, 2023, Twitter user @atothe_d[5] joked about a post of the Aborted Baby Ghosts Crying meme with a quip about "X, the Everything App," gaining over 20 retweets and 380 likes in nearly one year.
It was also used to sarcastically comment on Musk's controversial decisions and posts in the early 2020s and the extremist content posted on X. On August 19th, 2024, user @TheWapplehouse[6] screenshotted a tweet from a different user saying girls should be able to get married at 12 years old, joking that Musk couldn't figure out why advertisers did not want to advertise on "X, the Everything App," gaining over 660 retweets and 4,900 likes in one week.
