"We're All Soldiers Now" is a voice line uttered by the hero Soldier 76 in the multiplayer shooter game Overwatch.
Origin
In October 2015, Overwatch began a closed beta testing period, during which many players discovered the Soldier 76 voice line "We're All Soldiers Now." On October 25th, 2015, Redditor Platinum_Monkey submitted a Soldier 76 fan art titled "We're All Soldiers Now" to the /r/Overwatch[3] subreddit (shown below).
Spread
On April 17th, 2016, Tumblr user ellbent posted a "We Are All Africans" picture with Soldier 76 superimposed over Richard Dawkins' face and the phrase "We Are All Soldiers" printed on the front of his T-shirt (shown below). Within four months, the post gained over 900 notes.
On May 9th, 2016, Redditor Shnobz submitted an /r/Overwatch[2] post titled "The Soldier 76 Syndrome," which claimed that when there are at least 2 Soldier 76 heroes on a team, typing the phrase "We're all soldiers now" in chat causes many players to swap to Soldier 76. On May 22nd, 2016, the Unit Lost YouTube channel uploaded a video titled "We're All Soldiers Now," featuring an Overwatch team populated entirely by Soldier 76 heroes (shown below).
On June 5th, Tumblr user nunia[5] posted a screenshot of a Soldier 76 Overwatch team along with a chat message saying "we're all soldiers now" (shown below). Over then next two months, the post received more than 110 notes.
From June 14th to June 21st, Overwatch held a special "Weekly Brawl" event, in which all participants play the Soldier 76 hero in team matches (shown below).[1]
