Take, For Example, Death, War, Hunger is an exploitable panel from the Chainsaw Man manga said by the character Makima. In early 2022, the panel was edited to feature humorous replacements for one of the plagues listed in the panel.

Origin

On September 13th, 2020, Chainsaw Man chapter 84, "Hero of Hell," was released.^[1] In the chapter, Makima explains the things that make humanity unhappy, such as "death, war, and hunger." She further explains she will use Chainsaw Man's power to erase them all (shown below).

I WILL ERASE ALL OF THEM WITH CHAINSAWMAN'S POWER. THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS IN THIS WORLD THAT THE WORLD WOULD BE A BETTER PLACE WITHOUT. TAKE DEATH... OR WAR... OR HUNGER.

The panel began growing popular in a meme in early 2022. On January 24th, 2022, Twitter^[2] user @Virurah uploaded a colored version of the panel with "hunger" changed to an NFT. The tweet received more than 3,100 likes and 504 retweets (shown below). The next day, Reddit^[3]^[4] user PornstarAtlus reposted the image to /r/chainsawmancirclejerk and /r/ChainsawMan subreddit. The posts received more than 1,200 and 1,400 points, respectively.

Spread

Shortly after the announcement of a Chainsaw Man anime, it was revealed that the character Makima will be voiced by Japanese voice actor Tomori Kusunoki.^[5] This caused the meme to gain popularity among anime communities to create " seiyuu jokes," editing the panel by having other characters voiced by Kusonoki say the line. For example, on August 5th, 2022, Facebook^[6] page "Joke Sirkel 25ji" uploaded an edit that added Kanade Yoisaki's hair from Project Sekai. The post received 149 reactions and 140 shares (shown below, left). On August 8th, 2022, Facebook^[7] page "Love Live Repository of Dank Materials" uploaded a redraw of the panel using Setsuna Yuki (previously known as Nana Nakagawa) from Love Live Nijigasaki. The post received 690 reactions and 351 shares (shown below, right).
