Sakamoto Days is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yuto Suzuki. The manga has been serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump since November 2020, gaining an expressive online fanbase that creates ironic memes and photoshop edits of the manga panels.

Plot

Sakamoto Days follows the story^[1] of Taro Sakamoto, a retired hitman who earned legendary status in the underworld of Japan. One day, however, he fell in love, retired and gained weight. Now Sakamoto fights to protect his family from danger.

History

Yuto Suzuki first published a one-shot titled Sakamoto in Shueisha's Jump GIGA on December 26th, 2019. Almost a year later, Sakamoto Days debuted in Shueisha's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump on November 21st, 2020.^[2] As of August 2023, 13 volumes of the manga have been released.

Reception

By October 2022, Sakamoto Days had 2.2 million manga copies in circulation.^[3]

Online Presence

Online, Sakamoto Days has been gaining more fans, who engage in online discussions about the manga and also posts memes based on panels of the material. For instance, on August 22nd, 2023, X^[4] user MangaMoguraRE described Sakamoto Days as "the manga with the best action scenes I have ever read." The post (shown below) features some action scenes from the manga, which amassed roughly 2,400 likes and 534 retweets in a week.

On TikTok, fans of the manga post fancams videos showing some scenes and favorite characters. For example, on October 18th, 2022, TikTok^[5] user @trafalgarwana posted a fancam highlighting the main character Sakamoto (shown below, left), which garnered over 2.7 million plays and 266,000 likes in a year. On October 26th, 2022, TIkTok^[6] user @shininja96 posted a fancam of the character Takamura (shown below, right), which amassed roughly 2.3 million plays and 161,000 likes in a year,
