Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a 2022 animated adventure film produced by DreamWorks Animation. The film is a sequel to 2011 film Puss in Boots, an a spin-off of the Shrek film series. The film follows Puss in Boots as he goes on a journey to find the mystical Last Wish and restore the eight of his nine lives.
History
On December 21st, 2022, animated film Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, produced by DreamWorks Animation, premiered.[1] The film, which is a sequel to the 2011 film Puss in Boots, follows the story of titular protagonist, voiced by Antonio Banderas, who is on a quest to restore eight of his nine lives (trailer shown below).
Reception
The film received widespread acclaim both from movie critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes,[2] the film accrued a 95% critic rating based on over 140 reviews, and a 93% user rating based on over 2,500 reviews. On IMDb,[3] the film maintained a 7.8 user rating as of January 19th, 2023.
Fandom
The film achieved major popularity online, with some of it's characters, namely protagonist Puss in Boots, his former girlfriend, thief Kitty Softpaws, antagonist Jack Horner, and the overarching antagonist Death / The Wolf, amassing significant amount of fan art. The film trended on social media in mid-January 2023 as users praised its plot, themes and animation quality.
The film started trending on Twitter immediately following its release with viral post comparing its against Avatar: The Way of Water, a movie also released in December 2022. For example, on December 21st, 2022, Twitter[4] user @MelonSaurus posted a meme comparing the films that gained over 12,300 retweets and 89,500 likes in one month (shown below, left). On December 29th, 2022, Tumblr[5] user junoofthestars posted a Sections of a Joint meme about the film that accumulated over 22,800 likes and reblogs in three weeks (shown below, right).
In early January 2023, the film's characters, most notably Death / The Wolf, inspired fan art. For example, on January 5th, 2023, artist @ZoYu26152516 tweeted[6] a fan art of the character that gained over 3,700 retweets and 19,000 likes in two weeks (shown below, left). On January 7th, artist @SummerOrigins shared[7] a fan art that garnered over 6,200 retweets and 36,000 likes in twelve days (shown below, right).
The film's depiction of a panic attack also found appreciation online, with several posts about it going viral on Twitter. For example, on January 17th, Twitter[8] user @Bolverk15 made a tweet about it that received over 16,200 retweets and 165,300 likes in two days (shown below).
