Smormu

About

Smormu is a character from Smiling Friends who appeared in the 2022 episode Shrimp's Odyssey. The episode begins with a scene asking viewers to vote on whether they want to keep Smormu as a permanent fifth Smiling Friend and ends by claiming Smormu was voted to stay, although it is later revealed through an "in memoriam" card that he died. The character became the subject of memes in the Smiling Friends community online, including a trend where Smormu is drawn on white boards next to a poll asking if people want him to remain on the board or not.

Origin

Smormu made his first and only appearance in Smiling Friends in season one episode three, Shrimp's Odyssey.^[1] The episode starts with an announcer asking viewers to vote on whether or not they want Smormu to be the fifth Smiling Friend. During the episode, he appears in a scene where he dances in front of Pim and Charlie to try and cheer Pim up. At the end of the episode, the announcer returns to announce that Smormu was voted to stay as the fifth Smiling Friend. It is then revealed that Smormu died of unknown causes. He has not appeared in another episode since.

Smormu became the subject of memes over the following months on sites like the /r/SmilingFriends^[2] subreddit and X. On February 22nd, 2022, u/spookyjuice69 posted an image of Smormu drawn on a white board with a poll next to him asking if he should be kept on the board, garnering over 3,800 upvotes in two years (shown below, left). On April 22nd, u/Phionex141 posted an image to /r/SmilingFriends^[3] of Smormu's addition to the /r/Place canvas, garnering over 1,300 upvotes in two years (shown below, right).

On April 16th, 2024, X^[4] user @piss_wizzard posted a meme referencing a scene in Steven Universe in which Charlie talks about becoming half of Smormu, garnering over 21,000 likes in a day (shown below, left).

On the same day, X^[5] user @VivaDaRevo posted a compilation of images of Smormu drawn on white boards, writing, "thinking about smormu on school white boards," garnering over 20,000 likes in a day (shown below, right). Later that day, X^[6] user @cooldisks101 posted a voiced over version of the meme by @piss_wizard, garnering over 2,000 likes in a day.
