About
Elon Musk's @America Twitter / X Account refers to the Twitter / X account America or @america, which is reportedly owned by Elon Musk for his political action committee (PAC) called the America PAC that supported Republican candidate and former President Donald Trump in the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election. The @America account amassed viral criticism and backlash in 2024 because many viewed it as a propaganda machine. Users also criticized X owner Elon Musk for his involvement with the account and speculated that he was using it to sway public opinion before Election Day. The perception was worsened by Musk's claims to depoliticize X when he acquired the company, with some seeing him as a hypocrite for the promise by November 2024.
History
The original @America Twitter account shared its first tweet on March 28th, 2007, per the site's earliest archive in the Wayback Machine (shown below).[1] By November 2022, the account had amassed over 7,800 followers.[2]
The account was purchased by Elon Musk's PAC, the America PAC, sometime before October 5th, 2024, as the account's first tweet under the new ownership was shared on October 5th, receiving over 8,600 likes in a month (shown below). The tweet concerned conservative views on illegal immigration and attacked acting President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
The account continued posting similar content in the following weeks. For instance, the account's most viral tweet[4] was shared on October 30th, regarding Donald Trump's garbage truck photo op. The tweet, which championed the event, gained over 131,000 likes in six days (shown below).
Reception
On October 5th, 2024, following @America's first tweet,[3] X users reacted en masse to the account's shift. For instance, that day, X[5] user @daanksy replied and said, "I wonder who bought this account," inferring that it was Elon Musk or another conservative pundit (shown below).
Alternatively, other X[6][7] users championed the account's new direction in the replies to its initial tweet.
Critical quote tweets of @America surfaced en masse in the following weeks. For instance, an early and viral example was shared by X[8] user @AURORAJADEY on October 28th, who used an American Dad! scene to make fun of the account, gaining over 95,000 likes in eight days (shown below).
On November 5th, 2024, X[9] user @IcyVert quoted the @America account, which shared a clip from Musk's then-recent interview on Joe Rogan's podcast. @IcyVert wrote, "I do find it weird that Elon made an account structured to look like it stands as a neutral 'America' however it’s just propaganda and fear-mongering from him," amassing over 82,000 likes in less than a day (shown below).
