About
Disney+ is a streaming service created by Disney which will host film and television series owned by Disney, including content from Lucasfilm, Marvel, Fox, Pixar, and National Geographic. The service will compete with Netflix and Amazon Prime Video and a compliment to Hulu, which Disney partially owns.
History
On August 8th, 2017, Disney announced it would soon ditch Netflix and launch its own streaming service, starting in 2019.[1] On November 8th, 2018 Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the service would be named "Disney+."[2] On April 11th, 2019, they announced a launch date of November 12th, 2019[3] and a price of $6.99/month. Captain Marvel will be the first Marvel film released in theaters that will first stream on Disney+. Iger has stated Disney plans to eventually host all movies in the Disney Vault on the service, and all thirty seasons of The Simpsons will stream exclusively on Disney+. The first six Star Wars films will be available at launch, along with The Force Awakens and Rogue One.
