Shinji Throwing a Bottle at Asuka is a crudely drawn MS Paint Neon Genesis Evangelion fan art that shows an overweight Shinji Ikari sitting on a recliner chair and throwing a beer bottle at Asuka Langley that breaks on her head. The drawing circulated on social media sites like Reddit, Tumblr, Twitter / X and DeviantArt in the early 2020s. It was commonly used for speech bubbling and as a reaction image to portray throwing a bottle at someone with a bad opinion. It also amassed redraws that predominantly surfaced in 2024, typically involving inserts of other characters into the template.

Origin

On September 8th, 2021, iFunny ^[1] user @kp8vdl1vlr8231 posted a screenshot seemingly from the Brazilian Facebook ^[2] group Evangelion BR – Neon Gênesepostagem that showed a post from a user named Gabriel Moura captioned, "vai lavar a louça muié," which means, "go wash the dishes," in English (shown below).

The image in the post was an MS Paint fan art of Neon Genesis Evangelion character Shinji Ikari sitting on a recliner chair and throwing a bottle at Asuka, causing it to break on her head (shown below).

The URL of Gabriel Moura's Facebook post is currently unknown. The iFunny^[1] post is currently the first discovered instance of the image online.

On December 29th, 2022, Redditor^[3] CrackALackinSnack posted the image to /r/evangelionmemes, captioning it, "best ending," receiving over 4,000 upvotes in two years (shown below).

On December 31st, iFunny^[4] user @StickOS posted a screenshot of a Speech Bubbling instance that used the image, receiving over 4,000 smiles in two years (shown below).

On February 4th, 2023, Redditor^[5] CrackALackinSnack posted an animation of the image to /r/evangelionmemes, receiving over 370 upvotes in a year (shown below).

The original image gained viral reposts on Instagram^[6] in mid-2023.

In 2024, the image resurfaced en masse on X, evident in a post shared by X^[7] user @HidamariSneed on July 13th, 2024, who captioned it, "relationship goals," gaining over 1,700 likes in a month.

Redraws and re-edits then surfaced, like one shared by X^[8] user @liviscope on August 15th, showing Asuka throwing the bottle at Shinji, gaining over 36,000 likes in six days (shown below).
