About

Sex Update, also known as Add Sex to X, refers to a series of ironic hornyposting memes in which users request developers to add sexual intercourse to a certain game, particularly to games popular among teenagers, such as Fortnite and Minecraft. The meme also includes requests to add "boob skin" or other similar changes.

Origin

On September 7th, 2019, Redditor^[1] ThiccJames made a post titled "Add Skin with big boob And sex in the Game" in /r/FortNiteBR subreddit, writing that they like "big boob" and requesting that sex was added to the game (shown below). The post is presumed to be ironic and is the only post submitted by the account. The post received over 800 upvotes in /r/FortNiteBR prior to being removed.

Spread

In the following months, screenshots of the post saw viral spread online. For example, on December 4th, 2019, Redditor^[2] milesbt posted a screenshot to /r/ihadastroke subreddit, where it gained over 39,100 upvotes in six months. On January 14th, 2020, iFunny^[3] user _Nezuko_Kamado_ reposted the image, with the post accumulating over 25,300 smiles in one year.

On January 14th, 2020, Redditor^[4] gcsawesome posted the earliest found meme referencing the post, a The World If meme that gained over 1,800 upvotes in six months (shown below).

On June 30th, 2020, Redditor chef_jeff_likes_meat made a similar post titled, "Fortnite needs sex" in /r/FortNiteBR^[5] and /r/copypasta^[6] subreddits, with the post gaining over 12,100 upvotes in /r/copypasta. The post (shown below) was widely circulated online in the following months; for example, a same-day repost in /r/comedyheaven^[7] received over 8,800 upvotes in six months.

The joke received another burst of virality after on September 10th, 2021, Twitter^[9] user @Itisapp replied to a post by @FortniteStatus, writing that in order to fix Fortnite making "every female skin naked" and adding "hot sex and porn" was required. The post gained 3 retweets and 33 likes and was copied by other users in the following days (shown below, left). For example, on September 14th, 2020, Twitter^[10] user @ex4rs replied to @FortniteStatus with the copypasta. The tweet gained over 100 retweets and 1,600 likes. On September 15th, Twitter^[11] user @8fisy tweeted the copypasta, with screenshots of the post being shared online in the following weeks (shown below, right).

In late 2020 and in 2021, the joke achieved significant prominence with users on social media, with developers of Among Us,^[12] Dead by Deadlight^[13] and other video games being jokingly asked to add sex to their games. Additionally, memes referencing the practice were also posted on Twitter, Reddit and other platforms.
