Say Gex is an internet slang spoonerism for "gay sex" used to circumvent internet censors. The term grew popular along with 3D Text Reaction Images.
Origin
On February 15th, 2022, Urban Dictionary[1] user Blaq Coffee submitted a definition of "Say Gex" that described it as "Switch the G and S" (shown below).
The term didn't get much attention until November 10th, 2022, when Twitter[3] user @GlitchyPSI quote-retweeted themselves[2] with a self-proclaimed "sequel" that read "say gex" in 3D text (shown below), although the tweet only received 150 likes in five months.
Spread
Starting in early 2023, the term was used on posts relating to gay sex. For example, on January 31st, 2023, Reddit[4] user bryanislion uploaded a post titled "say gex" to the /r/shitposting subreddit. The post received more than 2,800 points in four months (shown below, left). On March 29th, 2023, Reddit[5] user Prestigious-Army-155 uploaded a post using Animan's clip with a similar title to /r/whenthe subreddit. The post received more than 8,700 upvotes in two months (shown below, right).
On April 15th, 2023, TikTok[6] user @.ryoichi uploaded an edit using the "say gex" image, receiving more than 133,000 views in one month (shown below).
