About
The RFK Jr. Dog Photo, also known as the RFK Jr. Eating Barbecued Dog Photo, refers to a photograph leaked by Vanity Fair showing U.S. Presidential candidate and Kennedy family member Robert F. Kennedy Jr. holding a dead and barbecued animal, reportedly a dog, with an unidentified woman. The photo spread in mid-2024 after Vanity Fair reported that it was taken in South Korea and that the carcass was a canine, confirmed by its number of ribs (13). RFK Jr. denied the claim, alleging that it was a goat in the photo and that it was taken in Patagonia, Argentina. The image spread on social media sites like Twitter / X and Reddit in mid-2024, resulting in viral discourse and memes.
Origin
On July 2nd, 2024, Vanity Fair[1] published an article called "RFK Jr.’s Family Doesn’t Want Him to Run. Even They May Not Know His Darkest Secrets." The article was written by Joe Hagan and it relayed stories from insider sources about Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s "darkest secrets."
In one section, Hagan revealed a photograph showing RFK Jr. holding a barbecued animal carcass, about to take a bite of it, while a woman does the same with another piece of meat next to him (shown below).
Vanity Fair reported that RFK Jr. texted the photo to a friend who was traveling to Asia, telling him that "he might enjoy a restaurant in Korea that served dog on the menu." Per this, it was inferred that RFK Jr. was holding a barbecued dog. Vanity Fair reportedly spoke to a veterinarian who confirmed that the carcass was a canine, noting the number of ribs (13) and "the tell-tale 'floating rib' found in dogs." Vanity Fair also referenced RFK Jr.'s brain worm in the same paragraph (Vanity Fair excerpt, shown below).
Spread
Viral posts about Vanity Fair's article surfaced en masse on July 2nd, 2024. For instance, on that day, X[2] user @highbrow_nobrow tweeted the news, spreading it to the platform and receiving over 4,800 likes in less than a day (shown below, left).
Memes then surfaced, like a quote posted by X[3] user @conzmoleman on July 2nd, who attached a screencap from Peep Show, captioned, "lol this is literally and actually how rfk got the brain worm," receiving over 350 likes in less than a day (shown below, right).
RFK Jr.'s Goat Claim
On July 2nd, 2024, RFK Jr. posted a tweet to his X[4] account denying Vanity Fair's claim. He started by writing, "Hey
@VanityFair, you know when your veterinary experts call a goat a dog, and your forensic experts say a photo taken in Patagonia was taken in Korea, that you’ve joined the ranks of supermarket tabloids." In an hour, the tweet received over 5,300 likes (shown below).
