Queening Out is an LGBTQ+ slang phrase that is used to describe or mock gay men either throwing a tantrum, being overly excited, or displaying stereotypically gay behaviors. The phrase has long been used in LGBTQ+ circles in the United States, with memes about "queening out" seeing a resurgence in 2024.
Origin
The earliest known record of the phrase "queening out" is a March 28th, 2008 post on the Wordpress[1] blog "Word Of The Gay," where "queening out" is described as "a gay male tantrum," or the act of "an individual exhibiting stereotypical gay tendencies."

In February 2021, a gay journalist complained about being fired by CBS, saying that he was told to stop "queening out" and advice to "butch it up."[2] (seen below, left).
On June 16th, 2023, X[3] user @wolktress posted about someone defending Ezra Miller, writing, "screaming rn at ezra miller’s hostage native american teenager defending him by saying he was just queening out." The post gathered over 1,000 likes in a year (seen below, right).
Spread
On May 25th, 2023, Instagram[4] page @avantgardeboygirl posted a meme using the phrase "queening out," gathering 55 likes in a year (seen below, left). On October 2nd, 2023, X[5] user @GREASESTAlNS quoted an AI-generated image with the caption, "the hilarious ross mathews queening out in the back," gathering over 4,000 likes in six months (seen below, right).
On November 4th, 2023, X[7] user @stxvxn_8381 posted an image of Minnie Mouse and Daisy Duck, writing, "they’re queening out," and gathering over 8,000 likes in five months (seen below, left). On February 25th, 2024, Instagram[6] page @yung_nihilist posted a meme showing a text from "a straight guy" that reads, "when are we queening out sis??" The post gathered over 9,000 likes in two months (seen below, right).
