Inauguration Memes
Barron Trump drew attention for his behavior during the Inauguration of Donald Trump. For example, a GIF of Barron rejecting his mother Melania's attempt at a high five (shown below) drew some media attention[3] and was spread on Twitter in the following days.[4]
An image of Barron holding his head in his hands in apparent disbelief grew popular; for example, an image posted to /r/MemeEconomy on January 24th[6] using the image of Barron as a reaction image related to Minecraft (shown below, left) gained over 15,900 upvotes.
Also on January 24th, an image of Barron staring out the window of a limousine was posted on Reddit's me_irl,[5] where it gained over 26,000 points in less than one day.
SNL Writer Tweet Controversy
On January 20th, Saturday Night Live writer Katie Rich sparked controversy when she tweeted "Barron Trump will be this country's first homeschool shooter." The tweet (edited version shown below) has since been deleted.
The fallout from Rich's tweet sparked debate on whether Barron Trump was off-limits for mockery. Saturday Night Live immediately indefinitely suspended Rich for her tweet.[7] Rich later apologized for the tweet.
"The Expert" Shirt
On June 11th, during his first homecoming to the White House for summer break, Barron was photographed walking across the White House lawn wearing a T-shirt with "The Expert" printed on the front (shown below).
Shortly after, various image macros using the photograph appeared on Reddit and 4chan (shown below).
Peter Fonda Tweet
On June 19th, 2018, actor Peter Fonda posted a tweet written in all capital letters saying that Barron should be taken from his "mother's arms" and placed in "a cage with pedophiles" in response to controversies surrounding the separation of families at the United States border (shown below).
That day, Donald Trump Jr. replied to the tweet, calling Fonda a "sick individual" and asking him to "pick on someone a bit bigger" (shown below). Within 24 hours, the tweet gained over 21,300 likes and 6,900 retweets.[8]
Meanwhile, Melania Trump's spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham released a statement condemning Fonda's remarks as "sick and irresponsible" and revealing that the Secret Service had been notified.[9]
The tweet was subsequently deleted, and Fonda subsequently released a statement through his manager and publicist apologizing for posting the message the following day:
"I tweeted something highly inappropriate and vulgar about the president and his family in response to the devastating images I was seeing on television. Like many Americans, I am very impassioned and distraught over the situation with children separated from their families at the border, but I went way too far. It was wrong and I should not have done it. I immediately regretted it and sincerely apologize to the family for what I said and any hurt my words have caused."
