About
OMG I Almost Fell For These Illusions refers to a four-panel exploitable image macro in which text of an emotion or phenomena is inserted among three optical illusions paired with the title text.
Origin
The earliest traceable post to use the format was posted on July 25th, 2017 to Facebook page 8memes.[2] The post gained about 12,000 likes and reactions and over 26,000 shares (shown below). It is worth noting that the image has a watermark pointing to @hassan.sohail01, suggesting that the image came from an Instagram user of that name. However, as of July 31st, 2017, no account with that exact handle exists.
Spread
In the following days, the image spread primarily through Instagram and Facebook with various words and images replacing the original's "I love you." One of the most popular examples of the meme was posted on July 27th, 2017. Popular Facebook meme page Nihilist Memes[1] posted an example with "happiness" in the original text. It received about 48,000 likes and reactions as well as over 11,900 shares (shown below, left). The format has seen some spread on Twitter and Reddit as well. For example, on July 31st, 2017, a version of the post was uploaded to /r/dankmemes with a variation on the subreddit's popular "mods are gay" joke. That post gained nearly 700 points in 12 hours (shown below, right).
