Nightcap, Nightgown & Candle Stick Holder, also known as the Ebenezer Scrooge Outfit, refers to an old-timey, bedtime outfit of striped pajamas and a candle stick that became known in memes on Twitter alongside the concept of Honk Shoo and Mimimi snoring. The sleeping cap and gown, similar to that of Ebenezer Scrooge, became satirically known to hold powers of coziness, able to give anyone the best night's sleep of their life. The first known meme referencing the outfit surfaced on Reddit in 2019 and was related to rapper Drake's bedtime rituals.

Origin

On December 22nd, 2019, Redditor BarfMilkshake posted a picture to the /r/DrakeTheType^[13] subreddit of a Halloween costume stock image. Redditor BarfMilkshake captioned the post, "Drake the type of Nyquil nigga to go to sleep wearing this…" inherently referencing the Drake the type of guy trend which the subreddit is dedicated to. Over the course of three years, the post received roughly 1,400 upvotes (shown below). Additionally, the image of the man dressed in the pajamas was taken from the costumes website Costumes Galore,^[14] being the product image for "Nighttime Scrooge Costume."

On February 26th, 2020, Tumblr^[1] user eliteknightcats responded to a post by moisturiser noting they slept like "snrrrk mimimi." The post gained over 5,000 notes. It ultimately referenced the type of snoring prevalent in early and mid-20th century cartoons such as Popeye^[2] and Hercules.^[3]

On January 28th, 2021, Twitter^[4] user i_zzzzzz tweeted, "I'm tired of wandering around my big dark house in a nightgown carrying a candle on a little brass chamberstick. I want to go to the mall," gaining over 345 likes in a year and a half (shown below).

On June 22nd, 2021, Twitter^[5] user len0killer tweeted, "They don’t wanna see a sleepy little player like me tucked in all cozy with his night cap on," gaining roughly 5,000 likes in 16 months. Soon after, Twitter^[6] user nibiru_TRUTH replied, "they don’t know a thing about a candle on a plate," gaining over 260 likes in the same time period. Then, Twitter^[7] user exometrium replied, "on god this how I show up to the function," captioning a picture of a Halloween costume stock image wearing the "nightcap, nightgown & candle stick holder" outfit. The final reply received over 100 likes in 16 months (shown below, left).

On September 25th, 2021, Twitter^[8] user MattPostSaysHi tweeted, "I just know I’d sleep better if I wore this shit," captioning a different costume with the same "nightcap, nightgown & candle stick holder" outfit. The tweet received roughly 290,800 likes in 13 months (shown below, right).

On September 27th, 2021, Twitter^[9] user WhereisBalake referenced the "Drake the type of guy" meme when he tweeted "Drake the kinda guy to wear a night cap with matching pajamas to bed," gaining over 35 likes in 13 months. Two days later, on September 29th, 2021, happyOkbuddyretard on iFunny^[10] posted a Drake meme that edited the "nightcap, nightgown & candle stick holder" outfit onto him, gaining roughly 26,300 smiles in 13 months (shown below, right).

More and more creators started to reference the concept going into the remainder of the year and into 2022. For instance, on July 11th, 2022, the Instagram^[11] page arcanebullshit posted a variation on the Slide into your DMs format, instead writing, "You're in her DMs? I'm in my fucking PJs," and including images of men in the "nightcap, nightgown & candle stick holder" outfit. Over the course of three months, the meme received roughly 28,900 likes (shown below, left). On September 12th, 2022, Twitter^[12] user BenjaminCrew1 tweeted, "Bout to have the best sleep of my life," captioning four screenshots of his recent Amazon purchases, all being related to the pajama set. In one month, the tweet received roughly 698,600 likes (shown below, right).
