Kermit the Frog is a frog puppet created by American puppeteer Jim Henson, most notable for his appearances on the television shows The Muppets and Sesame Street. Kermit has become an icon of popular culture, and he is a prominent subject of multiple internet memes, including Kermit Drinking Tea, Evil Kermit, Kermit Falling Down a Stairwell and many others.
Origin
Kermit the Frog's earliest incarnation aired on the television show Sam and Friends, which aired in 1955.[1] The puppet wasn't supposed to be a frog, but eventually became one during the 1960s. In the 1970s, he appeared on Sesame Street, often in the role of a news reporter, and later on The Muppet Show as the host of the program. Since then, Kermit has appeared most notably in various movies, including Muppet Treasure Island in 1996 and The Muppets in the 2011.
Spread
The Wikipedia[2] entry for Kermit the Frog was created on October 18th, 2001. An official Facebook page has over 1 million likes, and a Twitter account has over 20 thousand followers.[3][4] Various videos and parodies featuring Kermit have become popular. In 2007, YouTube channel AdamRayComedy uploaded a video of Kermit reacting to 2 Girls 1 Cup, which gained over 6 million views. A video of Kermit on The Ellen DeGeneres Show uploaded in 2011 gained over 3 million views. In 2014, Kermit partook in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Kermit impressions are often used in game voicechat troll videos.

I Haz A Shuvel is a popular image macro featuring an image of the Muppet Babies incarnation of Kermit holding a shovel. The image first became popular on YTMND and spread to other websites from there.
Mystery Box
Kermit's Mystery Box is a popular segment from Sesame Street in which Kermit becomes frustrated trying to get Cookie Monster to guess what is in a box. The segment has inspired numerous parodies.
Sad Kermit
Sad Kermit was a series of videos which featured Kermit playing songs considered to be depressing and partaking in various acts of self-harm.[5][6] The original videos were taken down by copyright claims from the Walt Disney Company, which owns the rights to all of Jim Henson's Muppets; the highest viewed reupload, which features Kermit singing the song "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails, has nearly 3 million views.
Joel's Dad
Kermit has become associated by fans of the video game streaming website Vinesauce with the father of one of the streamers, Joel, after their voices were compared. Joel's dad is often portrayed in fan art as Kermit.
