Origin

Mortal Kombat 11 released on April 23rd, 2019. In a game's cutscene, Raiden announces "I must consult with the elder gods" before teleporting away (shown below, left). The line itself may have become a meme because Raiden had said variations of it multiple times in previous Mortal Kombat games (compilation shown below, right).

Spread

The quote quickly became a reaction image after the game's release. On April 24th, Redditor CoachSDot posted it as a reaction image to /r/dankmemes,^[1] gaining over 21,000 points (shown below, left). On April 26th, a deleted Reddit user posted a similar joke to /r/memes,^[2] gaining over 14,000 points (shown below, right).

The meme continued to spread in the weeks following the release of Mortal Kombat 11. On May 8th, Redditor d1psyyyy posted a Prequel Meme to /r/MKMemes,^[3] gaining over 340 points (shown below, left).
