Hon Hon Hon

Hon Hon Hon is a slang phrase which is often used to comically depict something or someone who is French, the French person or thing in question is often depicted laughing, sporting a moustache and sometimes including the "Baguette. Eiffel Tower" catchphrase.

Origin

On May 13th, 2005, Straightdope^[2] forum user Scott Plaid added a thread titled "Origin, first appearance, and meaning of “Hon, Hon, Hon!”, the pseudo-French laugh," which explained it was first used in a since deleted web comic Skirting Danger.

Spread

On March 29th, 2006, Urban Dictionary^[4] user erin and seymira submitted and entry for the similiarly spelled rhon hon hon which defined it as:

"a deep, somewhat evil sounding laugh in a french accent."

On August 2nd, 2010, Urban Dictionary^[1] user completely illiterate submitted an entry for hon hon hon which defined it as:

"the sound of French laughter, in all its nasally glory."

On September 27th, 2013, YouTuber Hisao Nakai^[3] uploaded a video titled "French Spider" which featured an animated spider repeating hon hon hon over and over. Within a year the video gained over 13,000 views.

On May 2nd, 2014, YouTuber A Valo^[5] uploaded a video featuring a man in a beret holding a baguette skipping past the Eiffel Tower titled "hon hon hon hon hon hon hon hon hon hon hon hon hon hon hon," the video has gained over 2,000 views as of September 2014.

As of September 2014, DeviantArt ^[6] over 4,000 pieces of fan art tagged hon hon hon.
