Hey Man, That's Not Cool refers to a scene said by a side character from SpongeBob SquarePants as he's caught making out with a pillow in his car. The scene gained popularity with edits of the character hugging dakimakuras, aka body pillows.

Origin

On June 1st, 2002, eason 3, episode 52b of SpongeBob SquarePants, titled "Mermaid Man And Barnacle Boy V," premiered in the US.^[1] In the episode, the Every Villian Is Lemons, or E.V.I.L, group is harassing teenagers in Make-Out Reef. Man Ray points a flashlight into the side character Sandal's car when he's making out with a pillow (scene shown below).

Spread

The scene grew popular in the 2010s as a meme with Dakimakura (or Waifu Body Pillow) edits. For example, on September 17th, 2014, Reddit^[2] user newmmy uploaded an edit of Sandals hugging a dakimakura with caption "you'll never understand our love" to the /r/funny subreddit. Although the photo has been removed, but it's still available on Wayback Machine^[3]. The post received more than 4,400 upvotes in ten years (shown below, left). On April 3rd, 2019, Reddit^[4] user SirAsianFish uploaded an anti-meme edit to the /r/memes subreddit. The post received more than 5,500 upvotes in five years (shown below, right).

On July 10th, 2014, Reddit^[5] user manc192 uploaded an edit of a Satsuki Kiryuin dakimakura from Kill la Kill to the /r/KillLaKill subreddit (shown below, left). On June 7th, 2018, Reddit^[6] user Vexty uploaded an edit of Monika from game Doki Doki Literature Club to the /r/DDLC subreddit (shown below, right).
