Hey Birdie refers to a clip from children's television series Nanalan' in which Mona comforts a hurt bird. The clip became a popular sound on TikTok and was usually paired with humorous captions describing times they feel weak.

Origin

The scene comes from the Nanalan' episode "Under My Wing," which aired on September 3rd, 2004.^[1] In the episode, Mona has to take care of a baby bird who has been injured. A scene where Mona comforts the bird was posted to TikTok by the Nanalan' TikTok account^[2] on September 26th, 2023, gaining over 2.9 million views and 339,00 likes in two and a half months (shown below).

The scene started seeing use in edits on TikTok starting in late November of 2023. On November 19th, 2023, user @amressefarrow used it in a TikTok that gained over 900 likes in three weeks (shown below, left). On the 21st, user mylittle_mnelli went viral with their edit, gaining over 12 million views and 2.7 million likes in the same time frame (shown below, right).

Over the following weeks, hundreds more videos using the sound were posted on TikTok. For example, on the 22nd, user @thedorefam_ posted an example that gained over 1,600 likes and 57,000 views in three weeks (shown below, left). On December 2nd, user @.dani.dannn posted a viral example that gained over 160,000 likes in one week (shown below, right).
