About
haiiiii ^_^ hi!! hiiiiii <3 haiiiiii hii :3 and omg hiiiiiiii x3 haiiiii hi hiii ^-^ are two catchphrases used in meme captions or written into exploitables that convey a sense of cuteness, girliness or kawaii. They're primarily used for images of two people having an online conversation. The originals were of two cats or kittens that became the subjects of many redraws. They were first used on Tumblr in early 2021 before spreading to other platforms in the following months.
Origin
On January 25th, 2021, Tumblr[1] blog mashallah, formerly known as shahada, posted an image of a kitty or kitten working on a computer, captioning it, "haiiiii ^_^ hi!! hiiiiii <3 haiiiiii hii :3" and earning roughly 75,000 notes over the course of a year and a half (shown below, left). Mashallah followed up on their post with another cat saying, "omg hiiiiiiii x3 haiiiii hi hiii ^-^" (shown below, right).
Spread
On February 1st, 2021, Tumblr[2] blog mobians used the catchphrase in a post that read, "haiiiii omg ^_^ hi!! hiiiiii <3 haiiiiii hii :3 (threat)," and earned roughly 28,000 notes in a year and a half (shown below). This use of the catchphrase is its first-known variation.
On February 7th, 2021, the Twitter[5] page catpicsdealer reposted mashallah's Tumblr posts in a tweet that received roughly 47,900 likes in a year and a half.
On March 5th, 2021, Tumblr[3] blog avockado repurposed the template to be of Grand Theft Auto V characters, earning over 210 notes in one year (shown below, left). On June 12th, 2021, Tumblr[4] blog okuuho redrew the original meme with different cats, earning over 210 notes in one year (shown below, right).
Going into 2022, the phrase became more frequent in memes and exploitables. For instance, on June 11th, 2022, the Instagram [6] page inhalemybees reposted a meme made by Instagram page bow.eep that exploited the My Brother In Christ or Dudes Be Like 'Subway Sucks' meme, earning roughly 21,400 likes in four days (shown below).
