The trails are mostly in the woods but there are great big expansions of fields throughout, and in the middle of the day with really nice weather when there no one out there and I am miles away from anyone I sometimes feel a great fear and like something could appear out of nowhere at any moment. So it goes... Is that a bright blue sky? And the sun shining? And a cool breeze? I can understand how this unnerves some but I never experienced any real sense of fear or dread in these situations. For me it is a momentary feeling of strangeness, an other-worldly kind of feeling that tbh I like. I used to experience this atmosphere quite regularly as a kid and just came to accept it. There was something Pascal wrote about the alienation of humans from nature. maybe this liminal space feeling has something to do with that, let me explain. he was describing the alienation of humans from the world due to science, a strange take at best. I think he was trying to get at this idea that Nature is a mystery that science seeks to have laid bare, and that "dissecting" reality in this way leads to a sense of discontentment, what does this have to do with liminal spaces, though? I think the unsettling sensation we experience when looking at photos or reading stories about liminal spaces has something to do with the lifeless quality. there are straight lines, stark shadows, and a lack of other living things. even despite the openness of the space, there's a sense that something's wrong because this isn't the world we're supposed to be looking at. without the bustling crowds and chirping birds, there is an oppressive silence that allows us to see our environment for what it really is: something unrecognisable from what nature devised. or maybe it shows us that nature can be just as cold and unrelenting as we are, and that in that, we are indistinguishable from nature itself. i know the feeling of the horror of noon but i like it it feels so calm and surreal like a perfect cozy little world just for you This reminds me of a PC game I watched my dad play a few times around 2001 or so named Schism. I'm gonna go look that up because if I remember correctly, it's basically a puzzle game set in a liminal space, frozen in time during the middle of the day. I'm starting to think this is some sort of time dilation phenomenon that traps you in a form of limbo. Missing 411 cases usually involve such sensations in the woods. through the maze of the student housing area below the canyon I only fear noon on summer days when I'm working outside, as a ginger I knowledge (which despite being a place I had been to many times seemed will suffer. When he made landfall he found to his astonishment a church on the island, whose organist was I can only assume us western folk have no fear of noon playing the very same tune. It was the tune the trade because we're all at work inside for the most part winds had played in the ship's rigging. What you heard was an accidentally-created Aeolian harp made up of electrical wires and clotheslines, singing in the wind. It is normally too soft to be heard, but in the absence of all other sound, our ears become sensitized, reaching out for any sound at all, be it ever so small a wisp. The sound which no one hears but you, for they are deaf to it, having heard it all their lives. That feeling of emptiness and stillness is what makes up the core of who I am because I was able to build myself back from crippling despair and make myself a stronger individual. By that same token I've seen confident people go in to what can only be described as an extreme I remember the world looked so impossibly vast then, like that feeling isolationist bubble basically a pocket of calm and it will you get on psychedelics where everything looks way bigger, but erode them. Everyone is built differently but I'm pretty sure taken to such extremes, and like the yellow of the grass and blue of I experienced this phenomenon and it actually helped me the sky were so bright that they literally hurt my eyes. Looking back, I don't fully understand what happened, like why a promising mushroom trip outside away from people on a peaceful summer day could've gone so wrong (and I'm not usually someone who has a particularly hard time on psychedelics?), like what it was exactly that I felt so afraid of, and I think I can maybe blame it on something like the feelings in this post, like somehow on that day, a bright and sunny afternoon felt more foreboding than the darkest night ever could have. I've always felt at ease in these spaces even as a kid. I would run off to the empty parts of department stores, unfinished displays in the museum, or abandoned animal enclosures at the zoo, just to stand there in awe of the space and the feeling it gave off. In my teens I would visit a specific indoor mausoleum almost every week, ditch class to sit and relax in the empty hallway, drive a long way just to find an empty underground parking structure. I guess it's no wonder I ended up out in the Aleutian Islands as an adult. The interesting thing about this phenomenon, the intense fear that everything in the whole universe as it is must die, is essentially true. Physics tells us that entropy must always increase. Energy always flows down the gradient until the entirety of any closed system is perfectly homogenous. No know force can counteract this. Eventually, in the very distant, but still finite, future the entire universe will be one homogenous blob of perfectly distributed energy. It will experience heat death. And it will be dead infinitely longer than it was alive. The fact that humans can know this intuitively, despite having never studied physics quantitatively, indicates that some part of us knows the rules unconsciously. Some part of us can hear the music of the spheres like some alien labyrinth because of how hard I was tripping, and I kept seeing swirling Aztec-looking glyphs at the corners of my vision the whole time I was trying to navigate through it). Part of me at this point considered trying to walk to the nearby hospital and just stumbling in raving like a lunatic and seeing what they could do for me (looking back, I'm not sure why? Like I was just tripping, I wasn't actually probably in any real danger? Lol), but thankfully I was still driven on to reach the tram that I could take basically directly back to phenomenon that happens. my house, as I figured I could at least hide from the hateful, omniscient Sun there. spend everyday trying to do something that makes me stronger, smarter and suffer in some way. Preparing for something I don't understand but tease my brain that I know I know something my mind may not. Its likely I create these evolving monsters in my head where the space and the silence meets the boogiemen I am preparing for. I wouldn't consider it horror writing, because it is an actual Reminded me on Anton Chekhov's The Steppe. Not trynna sound like a nihilist, but the curse of knowledge is real This feeling freaks russians out? I've felt a kind of feeling in similar situations of this but it's always been a feeling of satisfaction and comfort as opposed to fear. i feel like this, all day every day. But i mitigate the horror. Somehow. Also those who browse these boards tend to be nightowls and shut ins in large part due to social anxiety. The peak of the day minus what scares them (people and social interaction) is paradoxical because for so long both are intertwined with one another Theres a specific feeling i get in such situations. But it's not fear, i don't know how to describe it. Like my mind goes completely blank, like i stop existing for a split second but everything becomes more real than real. there is complete peace. It's an unatural feeling that is impossible to feel on command or outside those situations. Is my brain wired too autistically to comprehend terror?
